NextUp and Guardian Scholars Programs to Assist Foster Youth at AVC

The NextUp and Guardian Scholars Programs are important initiatives aimed at supporting current and former foster youth. By fostering a sense of community and belonging, the programs help students connect with campus life, access resources, and achieve their personal and academic goals. It emphasizes the importance of creating opportunities for these individuals, ensuring they have the support needed to thrive in their educational journeys.

The NextUp program provides specialized support for foster youth to succeed academically and financially at AVC. Eligible students receive guidance, resources, and assistance while attending college.

Eligibility for NextUp: 

  • Eligible for EOPS 
  • Current or former foster youth 
  • Enrolled in at least 9 units 
  • Under 26 years old at the start of the academic year 
  • In out-of-home placement, dependency, or ward of the court after age 13 
  • Proof of dependency required
  • Age restrictions may apply

Guardian Scholars Program 

The Guardian Scholars program offers a support system aimed at cultivating success for current and former foster youth. This program helps students thrive academically, personally, and emotionally by connecting them with key resources. 

Eligibility for Guardian Scholars: 

  • Current or former foster youth 
  • Enrolled in at least 9 units 
  • Proof of dependency required
  • Age restrictions may apply

Both programs provide a comprehensive support network to ensure students can reach their full potential.
