- More Class Accessibility that Fits Your Schedule
- Broader Offering of Courses
- Save Time, Finish College/Transfer Sooner
- Potential Eligibility for More Financial Aid
Who is recommending the new calendar?
A 14-person Calendar Committee made up of instructors, non-instructional staff, an ASO student representative, union representatives and college leaders have reviewed several ideas for a new AVC calendar and are recommending a new calendar that benefits students more.
Why?
The recommended calendar would allow you, our students, to complete your education in a more efficient way, provide you with more opportunities to attend courses that best fit your schedules, and provide more opportunities for financial aid, which many of you count on.
The recommended calendar would eliminate winter intersession and lengthen the summer session to 12 weeks. Previously, the compressed nature of winter intersession courses made it difficult for many students who have other commitments to participate, and the shorter summer session limited the type of courses that could be offered.
In addition, there is NO federal financial aid available for winter intersession, making the access to intersession unaffordable for many students. For summer session, a Summer Pell Grant is available and students who complete 30 units in one year, which includes summer, may be eligible for a completion grant of an additional $4,000 or a prorated amount.
Current credit limitations of intersession and summer would no longer be in place and students could take a full-time schedule during summer. The new recommended calendar would provide part-time and full-time students with the chance to complete 30 units in one academic year, making you eligible for a completion grant of $4,000!* (or a prorated amount).
A longer summer session would allow for a robust evening schedule and daytime offerings, making courses more accessible for all students.
What will the recommended calendar look like?
The recommended calendar would begin in the 2020-2021 academic year and include 16-week fall and spring semesters, and a 12-week summer session.
